OUR HISTORY

Mountain West is a multi-line insurance company, serving the needs of individuals, families, and businesses throughout Wyoming and Montana. Our mission is to provide financial peace of mind for our customers with competitive, quality products and services. We are the largest domestic property and casualty insurance company in Wyoming, and the primary writer of agricultural properties in both Wyoming and Montana. We are a mutual insurance company, an insurance company which has no shareholders but instead is owned entirely by its policyholders.

Our journey began in 1946, when Wyoming Farm Bureau organized an insurance committee to investigate the feasibility of establishing an automobile casualty insurance service for Farm Bureau members. At the annual meeting in 1947, members voted to raise money to fund the new company.

On August 27, 1948, the Wyoming Insurance Department issued charters to the "Agricultural Insurance Company of Wyoming" and "Agricultural Indemnity Company of Wyoming," and the two companies officially opened for business that day. The company made its first home on South Second Street in Laramie, WY. This three-bedroom upstairs apartment served as office space for a small group of employees who processed the 1,500 charter policies. Files were kept in the apartment's kitchen cabinets.

We've come a long way since that day. For over 60 years, we've provided communities in Montana and Wyoming with quality service. Through a partnership with Farm Bureau Financial Services (Des Moines IA), our agents also assist clients with their financial needs in areas such as life insurance, retirement planning, long term care, disability insurance, estate planning and business succession planning.
